Cash dieting—calories per dollar: A novel approach to inform food choices?

Highlights

  • Fast-food menu labeling has not resulted in fewer calories being consumed.

  • We created a novel method of labeling by relating cost to calories.

  • Items from four fast-food restaurants were analyzed to find the calories per dollar (CPD), and calories per order (CPO) were calculated as the amount of calories in one full menu offering.

  • There is marked variation in the CPD values within and between fast-food restaurants, and a direct positive correlation between CPD values and CPO.

  • Use of the CPD concept may provide a new approach to support self-determined calorie restriction.
